Case Study

IDS Australasia is a powerhouse in defence technology, renowned for delivering innovative solutions that strengthen national security and military capabilities. Constantly pushing the boundaries of technological advancements, IDS Australasia plays a crucial role in safeguarding the region. As part of their commitment to staying at the forefront of technology, they required an advanced server and cybersecurity solution capable of supporting high-demand simulations, mission-critical projects, and stringent security standards.
River Sands is a leading Australian manufacturer and supplier of high-quality dried sands and specialised products used across construction, sports turf, water treatment, and underground mining. Established in 1974, the family-owned business has grown into a diversified operation producing more than 2,000 products under four specialist brands. With advanced manufacturing sites in Brisbane and Townsville, ISO 9001 certification, and its own Cement Testing Laboratory, River Sands is recognised for quality, innovation, and industry expertise. Their large-scale operations depend on strong, reliable connectivity to maintain efficient production and site performance.
River Sands’ onsite connectivity relied on a series of daisy-chained point-to-point links to connect different operational areas. While functional, this setup lacked resilience. If one link went offline, every connection downstream also failed, disrupting operations. Restoring connectivity required a technician to physically access the equipment room and manually power-cycle the affected link. This created unnecessary downtime, diverted technical resources from proactive work, and increased operational strain. With a growing reliance on digital systems and real-time monitoring, River Sands needed a modern, stable, and scalable solution to remove these recurring bottlenecks.

Productiv partnered with River Sands to redesign their connectivity infrastructure and replace the fragile daisy-chain model with a modern, point-to-multipoint (PTMP) architecture. This solution was engineered to significantly improve resilience by ensuring each link operated independently instead of relying on a linear chain. A single outage would no longer impact the wider environment, immediately reducing operational risk.
Leveraging advanced link technology, Productiv delivered a setup that increased stability, boosted performance, and eliminated the need for repeated manual resets. With a more robust backbone in place, the new design also reduced liability within the previous structure, ensuring the network could scale as River Sands continued to expand its operations. Productiv’s consultative approach ensured a smooth upgrade path with minimal disruption onsite, empowering the business with a future-ready connectivity framework.
Productiv’s solution delivered a range of meaningful improvements for River Sands, including:
These improvements have created a more stable, scalable environment for River Sands’ expanding operations.

The success of this project has strengthened the partnership between River Sands and Productiv, paving the way for continued collaboration. A second project upgrading the equipment monitoring system has already been approved, made possible by the increased throughput introduced through the PTMP upgrade. With a future-ready network and an adaptable system design, the site is now well positioned for further enhancements and continued operational growth.
